Although my license says Ralph, I am known as Larry on the air. I was first licensed as a Novice in 1965 with the call WN3ELQ. I upgraded to General in 1966 with the call WA3ELQ. In 1968 I received my Advanced ticket, and finally in 2002 I upgraded to Extra. I am a life member of ARRL, and a member of the Warminster Amateur Radio Club (Warminster, PA), the Mount Airy VHF Radio Club (the Pack Rats), and the (currently inactive) EPA QRP Club. I am active on 80 meters through 432 MHz. and can be heard on SSB, CW, FM, PSK31, and RTTY. My interests include rag chewing, DX, contests, QRP, kit-building, and public service. I am also an active VE and am the VE coordinator for the Warminster Amateur Radio Club. In addition, I have had the privilege of serving as a director, vice president, and president of WARC. QSL’s may be sent direct, via the “buro”, through e-QSL, or to Logbook of the World.
I am a native of Pennsylvania, growing up in Bucks County. I attended public school in the Central Bucks School District and graduated from Central Bucks High School in 1967. I attended Penn State University, graduating in 1971 with a BS in Education. I also attended Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey) and received a Master of Education degree in 1975. I have also taken graduate courses from Penn State and Temple University. Although I was a bachelor for many years, I met my beautiful wife Lynne while we were both teaching in the same school. We were married in the spring of 2013.
I retired from teaching after a 40 year career in public education. For 39 of those years, I taught in the Upper Moreland School District in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania. First assigned to the Cold Spring Elementary School, I taught fourth and fifth grade for 17 years. When Upper Moreland established a computer literacy program in 1988, I was asked to develop and teach the program in both the Cold Spring and Round Meadow Elementary Schools. I continued to teach the computer literacy program as it grew from teaching basic computer use with 15 Apple IIgs computers to teaching students to operate computers in today's interconnected world, and in September 2004 moved the program to the new Upper Moreland Intermediate School.
In addition to teaching and ham radio, I have a number of other interests. I was a lifeguard and swimming instructor at the Fanny Chapman Pool in Doylestown, PA from 1967 to 1971, and continue to enjoy swimming, snorkeling, and underwater photography. I have also supervised various after-school enrichment and sports programs for the Upper Moreland Parks and Recreation Department. I was a volunteer staff member in Cinekyd, a local non-profit organization, where for over 29 years I taught television and video production to students from elementary school through high school. I am also active in the Warrington Fellowship Church, where I serve as a sound technician and have conducted a nursing home ministry for many years. Currently my wife Lynne and I are volunteers with the Pearl S. Buck Volunteer Association at the Pearl S. Buck house in Perkasie, PA. We conduct tours of Ms. Buck's house and assist in fund-raising activities for Pearl S. Buck International.
